  With the quickening pace and increasing pressure of life, more people seem to care for their own business solely and have less interest in others’ business.   While we are supposed to go to bed tired and wake up energized, ever notice it’s often the other way around? Instead, you are wide awake when you lie down at night and wake up exhausted. Sound familiar? Late-night technology may be to blame. And it could be harming your personal and professional life.

  There is certainly a lot of technology around us in this modern era, and we’re bringing it to the bedroom, which can have negative impact on a good sleep. There are some reasons why you shouldn’t bring your tech to bed. And you can learn to manage technology to prepare yourself for better sleep.

  Theoretically speaking, to fall asleep, your body needs an increase in levels of melatonin. Problem is, a backlit device decreases melatonin production. Smartphones and tablets can emit what we call blue light, which can suppress natural hormones, and may have some negative circadian rhythm effects.

  Circadian rhythms act as an internal clock, keeping us on a daily cycle of sleeping, waking, eating and other behaviors. But circadian rhythms respond to changes in light and darkness in one’s environment. So, when the blue light is emitted and melatonin is suppressed, we’re not able to get to sleep at a proper time, neither are we able to get a good sleep.

  Even though many phones, tablets and e-readers today have an “anti-blue light,” “blue light filter,” or Night Shift option, data suggests these features may not be that effective in reducing blue light and 4 related negative effects.

  In a world that relies on people who have smartphones, from work emails to cashless businesses, not developing an addiction to your device is becoming increasingly difficult. While some think it’s only a mental issue, a new study suggests that this constant usage physically affects your brain the same way drug addiction does.

  According to a study published in the journal Addictive Behaviors, regions in the brain known as grey matter showed changes in size and shape for people with social media addiction. Maybe it is time for us to take some action about this problem. Grey matter controls a person’s emotions, speech, sight, hearing, memory and self-control. Other studies have reported similar brain alterations due to drug usage.

  “Given their widespread use and increasing popularity, the present study questions the harmlessness of smartphones, at least in individuals that may be at increased risk for developing smartphone-related addictive behaviors,” reads the study by researchers from Heidelberg University in Germany.

  In the U.S., over 24% of kids from 8 to 12 years old have their own smartphone and 67% of their teenage counterparts do, with younger teenagers using an average of about six hours’ of entertainment media daily. The average American spends around four hours a day on their smartphone. Sadly, this phenomenon is also commonly seen in other countries around the world, with young students glued to phones, and using a mobile phone in different life situations.

  Companies like Apple and Android provide features that help users manage their screen time, while other apps like Moment and Freedom help smartphone junkies block access to certain apps and websites.

  We all need to do more than just encourage people to “reach out” when they’re struggling. We need to recognize unhealthy behaviors and compassionately show up for loved ones―even if they say they’re fine or generally appear OK.

  The first thing you can do right now is to talk to your loved ones about mental health and their healthy behaviors. How do they normally sleep or eat? What does a regular routine look like for them? Knowing this information can help you recognize when something isn’t right on your own.

  People don’t always know how to ask for help or they feel like they’re being a burden. They may feel embarrassed when they’re having another mental health episode. If people around them are aware of what their baseline is, they can then intuitively pick up on when they need help.

  Secondly, we are supposed to know how to be an active listener.

  If someone does disclose that they’re having a difficult time, make sure to fully immerse yourself in that dialogue. Active listening refers to a technique that you concentrate on what the other person is saying and reply in a way that shows them you understand. And it is crucial in these tough conversations.

  Active listening skills are something none of us are really taught. It’s less about what you say and more about how you encourage them to talk more and give them a response that’s nonjudgmental and really supportive.

Coca-Cola was first invented in 1886, but the company quickly realized that they were better off selling the product as soda pop.

  Now, let’s see how you can use Coke to do everything from cleaning your coffee pot to removing bloodstains.

  1. Keep your toilets sparkling clean.

  This hack might sound odd, but we promise it works. Coca-Cola contains a lot of acid, and the acid in the pop can actually help kill germs that can’t live in high acid environments. All you have to do is to pour some Coke around the edges of your toilet bowl. Let the Coke work its magic overnight, and then in the morning, clean your toilet bowl with a scrub brush. Flush a few times and enjoy a fresh, clean toilet.

  2. Help soothe jellyfish stings.

  Have you ever been stung by a jellyfish? No? Well, lucky you. In case you ever do get stung by a jellyfish in the future, not that we’re wishing that misfortune upon you, you can use coke to help soothe the burn.

  Just open up some Coke and continuously pour the soda on the sting for at least 30 seconds. Then go straight to the doctor and get some professional medical help. Coke won’t cure the sting, but it will take the pain away.

  3. Defrost your car in the winter.

  If you live in a cold climate, you know that sinking feeling of walking out to your car in the morning only to discover that it’s encased in a sheet of ice. Now you’re going to be late to work because you have to spend ten minutes scraping all of that ice off your car. We have a better solution. Pour some Coca-Cola over the windshield. Within a minute the ice should turn to slush and brush right off.

  4. Remove stuck-on grease.

  Forget about buying expensive dish cleaning soap like Dawn or Tide when you can use a product you already have in your fridge.

  If you soak your greasy pans and cheese dishes in Coca-Cola for 30 minutes, they will come out looking de-greased and sparkling. I’d love to see a dish soap commercial for Coca-Cola of a family rushing around to do dishes and pouring Coke into the sink instead.

  Have you given much thought to the temperature at which you fall asleep? I haven’t. Turning on a fan or opening or closing windows is always a game-time decision for me. My feet and hands are always chilly, so I prefer to hop in bed when the sheets aren’t ice cold. But if it’s too warm, I’ll wake up in the middle of the night hot and uncomfortable.

  So, where’s the middle ground? Is there an optimal sleeping temperature? Science says yes. An expert says your bedroom should be between 60 to 67 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal sleep. Temperatures above 75 degrees and below 54 degrees can disrupt sleep.

  Why? Over a 24-hour period, our body temperatures naturally peak and decline. Our internal temperature is usually at its highest in the early afternoon and lowest around 5 a.m. When we fall asleep, our bodies naturally cool off. Helping your body get to that lower temperature faster can encourage deeper sleep.

  About one to one and a half hours before falling sleep, the body starts to lose heat from its central core and that brings on increased feelings of tiredness in normal healthy adults. These physiological changes happen well before going to bed and may be occurring before people realize them.

  There are many reasons that sleeping in a cooler environment can benefit your health. Here are four reasons to cool down tonight.

  1. Fall Asleep More Quickly

  It’s simple math, really. Provide an environment for your body to fall asleep more comfortably, and it will, in a faster manner. If it’s too hot or too cold, your body will waste energy trying to regulate, and leave you tossing and turning all night.

  2. Get A Better Night’s Sleep

  When your body isn’t trying to regulate itself, you’ll fall into a deeper, more restorative sleep. Research in Australia has also proven that sleeping in cooler environments can help decrease certain types of insomnia.

  3. Look More Youthful

  It’s been shown that sleeping in temperatures between 60-68 degrees will allow your body to release more melatonin, one of our best anti-aging hormones.

  4. Decrease Your Risk For Certain Metabolic Diseases

  Sleeping in a 66-degree room not only burns more calories while awake, but the amount of “brown fat” (or good fat) in the body increases. Brown fat allows your body to burn calories, not store them. Together, this could help lower the risk for metabolic diseases like diabetes over time.
