2024年12月英语六级考试阅读理解模拟题库(1)
We can begi n our discussion of "population as globa l issue" with what most persons mean when they discuss "the po pula tion problem": too many people on earth and a too rapid increase in the number added each year. The facts are not in dispute, It was quite right to emplo y the analogy that like ned demographic growth to "a lo ng, thin powder fuse that burns steadily and haltingly until it finally reaches the charge and explodes."
To understand the current situation, which is characterized by rapid increases in population , it is necessary to understand the rustory of population trends. Rapid growth is a comparative ly recent phenomenon. Loo 伈 ng back at the 8,000 years of demogrnphic history, we find that populations have been virtually stable or growing ve1-y s lightly for most of human history For most of our anccstors, life was hard , often nas ty, and vcry short. There was h.igh fertility in most places, but thjs was usualJy balanced by high mortality. For most of human rustory, it was seldom the case that one in ten persons would live past forty, while infancy and childhood were especially risky periods . O ften, societies were in clear danger of extinction because dcath rates could excecd their birth.ratcs. T hus, thc population problem th.roughout most of hjstory was how to prcvent ex tinctio n of the human race.
This pattern is important to notice. Not only does it put the current problems of demographic growth into a histor ical perspective, but it suggests that the cause of rapid increase in populatio n in recent years is not a sudden enthusiasm for more chlldrc n, but an unpr ovemcn t in thc conditions that traditionall y havc caused hig h mortality.
Demog raphic history can be divided into two major pe riods: a time of lo ng, slo w growth which extended from about 8,000 BC.till approximately AD. 1650. In the first period of some 9600 years, the population increa 沁 ed from so me 8 million to 500 血IJio n i n 1650 . Betwccn 1650 and thc presc nt, thc popul ation has i ncrcased from 500 而llion to more than 4 billion. And it is
estimated that by the ycar 2000 thcrc will be 6.2 bill.ion people throug hou t thc world. O ne way to appreciatc this dramatic differencc in suc h abstract numbers is to reduce the time frame to something that is more manageable. Between 8000BC and 1650, an average of only 50,000 perso ns was being added annually to the world's population each year. At prese nt, this number is added every six hours The inc reasc is about 80,000,000 persons annualJy
