　　suppose you ar e in the position of a par ent .would you allow your childr en to read any book or see any film they wanted to without first checking its content or finding out whether it is suitable for them ? i f your answer to the question is“yes , ” then you ar e either extr emely pe rmissive or just plain ir responsible. if your answer is“ no , ” then you a re exercising your right as a par ent to protect your childr en f rom what you consider to be undesirable influences . in othe r words , by acting as a censor your self, you a re admit ting that the re is a st rong case for censorship .

　　perhaps you will say that children need protection and it is the parents’responsibility to provide it . but with adults , it is anothe r thing . of course many adults can decide wha t is good and what is bad , but not all of them can do so . censorship is for the good of society as a whole . just imagine what chaos there would be if we lived in a society without laws ! like the law, censors hip cont ributes to the common good .

　　mor eove r , when discus sing cen sors hip , we s hould not confine our attention to gr eat masterpieces of genuine a rt , but should con sider the vast numbe rs of publications and films which make up the bulk of the enter tainment indu st ry . when censors hip laws ar e r elaxed , unscrupulou s people are given a licence to produce virtually anything in the name of“ar t”, but actually are very far from being work s of a r t . ther e is a tendency to equate“ artistic”with“pornographic”. the vast mar - ket for pornography would rapidly be exploit ed . one of the great things that censorship does is to prevent cer tain people from making fat profits by cor rupting the minds of others .
