　　This would be neither here nor there if it weren't for the observation that having an older mother seems to be an independent risk factor for obesity.

　　如果不是发现生育年龄的增长似乎是导致肥胖的一个独立风险因素，以上数据并无太多的实际意义。

　　六级词汇讲解：

　　本句的主干是This would be…o短语neither here nor there作主句的表语。 if引导的是含有虚拟语气的条件状语从句，其中，that引导的定语从句that having an older mother…for obesity修饰observation.

　　neither here nor there意为“无关紧要的，不相干的”。如：

　　Whether you go to the movie or stay at home is neither here nor there.

　　你去看电影还是待在家里都不重要。

　　independent意为“不相干的，独立的”。如：

　　Linda is old enough to be independent ofher parents.

　　琳达年龄够大了，可以不依赖父母而自立了。

　　六级考点归纳：

　　if引导的条件状语从句运用虚拟语气一般有以下几种情况：

　　表示与现在事实相反的假设，从句采用一般过去时，主句谓语部分为would/should+动词原形。如：

　　If they were here, they would help us.

　　他们要是在这儿的话就会帮我们。

　　表示与过去事实相反的假设，从句采用过去完成时had done，主句谓语部分为should/would+have doneo如：

　　If you had worked harder, you would have succeeded.

　　你要是再努力一些就会成功了。

　　Ifyou had come yesterday, I should have told you about it.

　　要是你昨天来，我就告诉你这件事了。

　　表示对将来情况的假设，从句可采用一般过去时、were+不定式、should+动词原形，主句谓语部分为should/would+动词原形。如：

　　If you succeeded/were to succeed/should succeed, everything would be all right.

　　你要是成功了，一切都会变好的。
