  It is not rare to hear and read news about business trust scandals nowadays. Hot-pot restaurants reuse waste food oil; e-commerce platforms sell fake products; companies intentionally leak customer data for illegal purposes. The list is endless. However, trust from consumers cannot be put more emphasis on by the business world.

  Reasons why consumer trust is of great importance are as follows. To begin with, setting up trust is one of the hardest things in the world. Buyers in this internet era are provided with considerable amount of goods and services. One brand needs to stand out to earn customers. More often than not, it is extremely hard for a firm to be the exceptional one in the competitive business market. Moreover, the current biggest threat to companies is not from outside competition, but from their own ability to keep consumers’ trust. As an old saying goes, “It takes years to build trust, and a few seconds to destroy it.” Even loyal consumers will switch to other shops and never come back, once a trust scandal breaks out.

  What can be done by enterprises to win consumers’ trust? Above all, companies ought to view earning trust as a brand-building opportunity and forever place consumers before short-term profits and self-interest.
